2010 Skinit.com entries

skinit

The deadline for Skinit.com’s big $50,000 video contest was Monday and it looks like they received at least 150 entries.  I say “at least” because filmmakers are still uploading videos 4 days after the deadline.  Skinit’s uploader is still active and it sends your video directly to the Skinit channel on youtube.  To Skinit’s credit, very few entries that were uploaded after the June 1st deadline have been approved and added to their official contest gallery.  But if you throw in the ineligible late entries, Skinit got about 175 submissions total.  That’s quite impressive and I hope it means Skinit will bring the contest back next year.  You can see all the videos that have thus far been uploaded here:  http://www.youtube.com/user/SkinitTV

Though I had been planning for months to enter the Skinit contest I sort of waited until the very last minute to get to work.  I finally settled on an idea about 2 weeks before the deadline which gave me just enough time to order and receive the skins I would need. If you remember, Skinit had 6 categories for this contest and one person in each category will win a $5,000 prize.  The categories were 60 and 30 second Consumer Electronics skin commercials, 60 and 30 second wall skin commercials and 60 and 30 second Tailgate Skins commercials.  I figured most people would enter the Consumer Electronics categories since those would be the cheapest and easiest ads to make.  So I decided to go for the tailgate category and I’m quiet proud of the final product.  All the actors I used are friends of mine and the shoot turned into an actual cookout.  Throw in a dancing horse-man and you have a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  I wound up getting so much footage that I was able to do a 30 second and a 60 second version of the entry.  Here’s the 30 second version of my submission:

Skinit judges ultimately pick the winners but a piece of every contestants final score is based on votes.  So if you have 30 seconds to spare, why not do your pal Beardy a solid and throw a couple 5 star votes his way.  I could certainly use them.  Jerks have already been giving me 1-star ratings to bring my score down.

So how about you?  Did you enter the Skinit.com contest?  I really like seeing what kind of entries our readers are doing so if you entered and would like a little help schilling for votes, e-mail me a link or leave it in a comment and I will add it to this post.

Here’s a very good entry from Shane F.  I think this one is going to be a serious contender:

And here’s a funny musical entry from Johnathon M.  The chorus is quite catchy:

Perfection ain’t easy

The other day I was up way too early and I was watching the only thing on TV that wasn’t Yu-Gi-Oh or an infomercial; Morning Joe on MSNBC.  Anyway, I’ve got it playing in the background while I’m on the computer (probably watching Doritos entries) when I notice that Kevin Spacey is a guest.  So I turn up the volume and guess what he’s talking about?  A video contest.  Specifically, one of the biggest video contests of the year; The Stella Artois Film Project.  But I just barely consider this one a video contest.  It was really more of a short film competition.  In my tiny mind, the only things that qualify this as a video contest are the facts that the films had to be submitted on-line and that there was a specific theme that each filmmaker needed to try and fulfill.  The theme was “perfection” because as any hipster can tell you, Stella Artois is the perfect beer.

Kevin Spacey explained that a winner had finally been announced and that they had a big party to celebrate the night before.  Here’s the winning entry by Jason Musante Klein.  I can’t embed so click on the photo below to view it.

First Place. Prize: $50,000

All the finalists in this contest where super slick.  Seriously, there were some major productions submitted.  The judges were pretty top notch too.  The winner was picked by Kevin Spacey, Sasha Baron Cohen, Lawrence Fishburn, James Blunt and Judy Dench.  Seriously, holy Sh&*%, man.  That’s an insane jury.  Wowza.  Those big names all probably agreed to participate because of Kevin Spacey.  His company, TriggerStreet co-founded the competition with Stella Artois.  TriggerStreet by the way is a really awesome  company/website/concept thing he and producer Dana Brunetti created to help emerging talent sneak through the gates of the Hollywood system.  It’s a great idea and the ‘A’ list celebrities who acted as judges this time around and the huge cash prize should tell you that TriggerStreet Films means business.  Check out their website here: http://www.triggerstreet.com.  Hmmm, Triggerstreet.com has a little box on it that flashes a “quote of the day.”  Below is today’s quote. Could there possibly be a better motto to sum up what video contests are all about?

“Ability is of little account without opportunity.”  – Napoleon Bonaparte

Fame and fortune

The opening of the remake of Fame came and went without much attention a few weeks back but to promote the release of the film, LG sponsored a Fame-themed video contest. They encouraged dancers, singers and musicians to film themselves covering the remade Fame theme song in whatever way they wanted. So a dancer could dance to it or a singer could sing it or a musician could play it. I’m sure you get the picture. There was only won prize and it was a whopper: $50,000. Here’s the winning video. I can’t embed it so click on the image to watch it.

fame

Warning: Video contains mimes

Whoever shot that thing is really smart. Most of the other entries consist of a people who set their camera up in their bedroom or in their ballet studio and danced in front of it alone. The makers of the winning video went all out and made a super slick music video. I can see why it won but….I don’t know, it seems a little TOO slick if you ask me. This is one of those times when you have to wonder if maybe the sponsor hired a ringer to create a great entry. Except that doesn’t make much sense in this case. Normally I’d suspect a ringer if a company plans on using the wining video in their advertising campaigns. But the ad campaign for Fame is over. The contest itself was part of that campaign and the movie has already kind of been forgotten about. So everything is probably on the up and up. I’m going to guess that a lot of the kids who jumped around in front of their web cams and thought they’d have a chance at winning 50 grand will be upset that a pro-made video went on to be named the winner in this one. Again, the winning video was really well made but picking it sort of goes against the original “film yourself” spirit of the contest, I think.
