BEHOLD! Giraffes in Space!

No joke…I think my entry for DoUpto.com’s video contest might be the funniest contest entry I’ve ever done. I made the friggin’ thing and I’ve watched it dozens of times. It just amuses the hell out of me.  The finalists are determined by views so do both of us a favor and watch this a billion times:

The sponsor of this contest, Doupto.com is a new website that allows people to sell any service for a fee. It seems like an interesting and possibly handy resource. Their promo video explains how the site works. Normally I wouldn’t give a contest sponsor a free plug like this but I was impressed that their explanatory video opens with a hand flipping off the camera and features a narrator that casually drops multiple f-bombs.

Anyway, for the contest DoUpto asked people to simply make “viral” videos about giraffes. (Their mascot is a giraffe.) And that was the only requirement. The video just had to somehow feature a (real or fake) giraffe. You didn’t even have to mention the sponsor. So without any real game plan, a friend and I headed to the Brookfield zoo outside of Chicago and I got some footage of giraffes. For some reason, the giraffes just stood their licking trees like they were the most delicious things in the world. Later, I dubbed in the conversation I imagined their were having in their secret giraffe language.

The 5 people who’s videos get the most views during the month of September move on to the finals.  But the second round is actually a totally different contest.  In the finals, contestants have two weeks to get DoUpto’s logo as high as possible.  Whoever gets the logo highest wins $15,000.  And yes, I mean that the winner will be the person who literally gets the sponsor’s logo as high as possible.  So for instance, if make the finals I could film myself with the logo on the top floor of the Sear’s (A.K.A. the Willis) Tower in Chicago.  But I think I can do something more creative than that. I’ll cross that bridge if and when I get to it.   For now, do me a favor and watch my submission. Thanks!

9/10/2012 UPDATE: My pal and video contest superstar HappyJoel is also in this contest. There are 5 finalist slots so why not give his entry a view too: http://youtu.be/MrYPuUHODjM

What’s it like to be a Mofilm winner?

When it comes to video contests, I’m a “cash prize” kind of guy.  I almost never go after contests that offer free trips or cars or ipads.  (which is kind of weird since I love to travel and I could really use an ipad)  But about two years ago a tech company hooked me and some friends up with a free trip to Amsterdam so we could hold a screening and party for a documentary I directed.   And I’ll tell you, going on a free trip so that you can attend a screening of a film you made is like the most pimp-tastic thing in the world.  You get to stay at a fancy hotel and everyone keeps telling you how much they like your work and  the sponsors set up tours for you and they take you to great restaurants and they get you drunk and by the end of the trip you’ve made a bunch of great new friends for life.  It’s a pretty awesome experience.

If I sound a little nostalgic it’s because I just watched this video that was shot by some of the winners of Mofilm’s Barcelona competition.  If you’re not familiar with how Mofilm works they set up video contests in conjunction with major film festivals or media events and all the top winners get trips to the festival as well as cash prizes. The Mofilm experience looks pretty crazy and I think for sure I’ll have to do a submission or two for one of their new contests this summer.  Check it out:

Mofilm HQ is in the UK which explains why that one dude got a call at 3AM.  But they had to realize they’d be calling the US in the middle of the night.  Couldn’t they have waited a few hours to tell that guy the good news?

Ultimate Job in Ireland winners

jobtitle

A long overdue congratulations goes out to VCN reader Tim Oliphant and his wife for making it to the finals in the Ultimate Job in Ireland video contest.  Back in February, Tim won first place in the Louisiana Hot Sauce video contest with an especially good entry, so he seems to be on quite a roll.  Here’s the official description of the “Ultimate Job” contest:

“To celebrate the launch of Ireland’s most exciting destination wedding and honeymoon website, The Irish Times have teamed up with Runaway Bride and Groom to find the right candidate to do 6 months of research… researching the most romantic and ultimate wedding and honeymoon venues around the world – with their partner.

They are looking for the right person (and their partner) to research and test out the most romantic and ultimate wedding and honeymoon destinations all over the world and then report back with their verdict (on the place, not the partner!) to their boss, 4,000 miles away.”

For making it the finals, Tim and his wife got to travel to Ireland to compete against 9 other couple in a series of challenges to determine the winners of the big “job.”  Another couple wound up winning the grand prize but a free trip for 2 to Ireland is a pretty sweet consolation prize.  Here’s the video that got Tim and his wife to the finals:

Ultimate Job in Ireland Finalist.  Prize: Trip to Ireland.

And here are the folks who won the whole thing.  Remember, the tasks they had to perform in Ireland are what won them the grand prize.  This video is just what got them into the top ten.

Ultimate Job in Ireland Winners.  Prize: 6 months of travel and 20,000 Euros.

Wow, I just read that they shot that with a camera phone!  They just posted their first official video blog and it looks like the sponsors gave them an actual video camera to work with from here on out.

Australia is confusing

australia

Ok, I am confused. I am confused by Australia; both the country and the continent.  Today I saw the results of the “Learn, Live and Grow; Study in Australia video contest.”  The point of the contest was to explain why it’s awesome to study abroad in Australia. Here’s the winning video:

First Place. Prize: A trip to Australia

For the most part it’s a funny entry and really covers all the bases that were required by the contest. So why am I in such a kerfuffle? Because First Prize in this contest is a trip to Australia….and the dude who won SHOT THAT ENTRY WHILE IN AUSTRALIA.

From the winning student’s mini-bio that’s up on the contest site, it looks like he’s already returned home to Canada. But still, doesn’t it seem weird that the guy was apparently just in Australia a few weeks ago and now he’s already got a free trip back? Couldn’t they have maybe given the prize to someone who wasn’t already in Australia while the contest was going on?? Oh well. Some Canadians have all the luck I guess.

Wait a second…this guy didn’t win a “trip” to Australia.  He won 2 round-trip plane tickets to Australia.  Man, that kinda sucks.  They couldn’t spring for a couple nights in a hotel?  On the plus side, at least I’m not jealous of that guy anymore.
