How to remove a facebook contest app

Companies run video contests on Facebook for one reason and one reason only; it’s an easy and fast way to get tons of new people to “like” their page.  That’s why almost all Facebook contests include a public vote phase.  To win, a contestant has to beg all their “friends” to like the sponsor’s page, allow the contest “app” and then vote for their video.  Then after the contest ends, all those people that voted will continue to see updates from the sponsor in their news feed.  Plus, if a voter had to allow the contest app, the sponsor has access to some of their private data.  I know that sounds kind of scary but facebook apps are usually harmless.  The basic ones just collect general data so the sponsor knows the demographics of the people that are interested in their products.

But once a contest is over, there’s no reason for you and your facebook friends to keep seeing the contest sponsor’s goofy updates about how awesome and fun their product is.  Getting rid of a facebook app is a little tricky though.  So here’s a step by step explanation of how you turn off the spam:

STEP 1:  Go to your Account tab and click on Privacy Preferences:

This will be in the upper right-hand corner of the screen

STEP 2:  Look for the Apps and Websites option on the bottom of the page.  Click Edit Your Settings:

This will be in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen

STEP 3:  The apps you have allowed will come up.  Click the Edit Settings button:

This will be right in front of your face

STEP 4:  Find the app you want to delete and click the little x to get rid of it for good.

This will also be right in front of your face

Step 5:  If you want to stop seeing posts from the contest sponsor you may have to also “unlike” their page.  Just go to the sponsor’s facebook page and look down the colum on the left.  Click on the unlike button. And that’s it, you’re done. That mean old company will never bother you again!

Meet my pal the PurpleBot!

Did you know that Whooping Cough is still around??  I didn’t but I do now.  Because apparently, I have it!  Six weeks of non-stop, furious  coughing has put a big cramp in my video contest-related activities.  Whooping cough can last up to 3 months but think I’m slowly getting better.  So last week I was able to shoot my first video contest entry in a good, long while.  (a good, long while for me, anyway.)  It’s for Royal Purple’s “Reel Wars” contest.  People were supposed to show how they used Royal Purple motor Oil.  I don’t know how this idea got into my head but as soon as I saw this contest I knew I had to build a giant purple robot that shoots motor oil out of it’s finger.  So that’s what I did.

The prize in this contest is $5,000.  Judges pick the ultimate winner but first I need to make the finals. So once again, I’m in need of some votes.  (I promise this will be my last “please vote for me post” for a while)  I only have to make the top 5 this time and so far I’m doing pretty good.  But how’s about you help me do even better by clicking the image below and voting for my PurpleBot!

Click the PurpleBot to vote for me!

Voting is done through facebook so no registration is needed.  Just click the vote button, allow the RP app and boom, you voted.  You can vote once every 24 hours if you’re so inclined but even one vote would be much appreciated.   And hey, if you want to leave a a nice comment on my entry it couldn’t hurt.  As always, thanks for the support everybody!

Jackson Hewitt’s “Win Win” contestant montage

I always like it when companies come up with a unique twist for their video contests.  And this year’s Jackson Hewitt contest is a nice example of that kind of creative marketing. Back during tax season they asked people to submit videos of themselves passing a printed “check” from their left to their right.  The idea was that after the contest was over, some poor editor would try and make a decent montage out of all the entries.  The person who made the best video would get a “Win Win.”  By that I mean they would win a $10,000 check for themselves and a $10,000 check for a friend.  The winners haven’t been announced yet but that montage video I mentioned is already finished.  I watched a lot of the entries in this contest since I was thinking about entering and I can tell you…most of them were not so great.  But whoever cut this montage together did an excellent job.  Check it out:

Oh crap! See that guy in the bright red shirt in that youtube video!? That guy beat me in the Dunkin Donuts contest last year and won a trip to Costa Rica! And right now we’re both finalists in the Dairy Queen contest! Man, he really gets around. Oh, speaking of the Dairy Queen contest, apparently you can now vote for my entry EVERY DAY! So if you’re on facebook, please do me a solid and throw me a vote:

Vote for me in DQ’s Mini Blizzard video contest!!!!!

AHHHHHHH!!!  Today I found out that I made the finals of Dairy Queen’s “Mini Blizzard Treatment” video contest!  I knew that they were getting a lot of entries so I really thought my chances of advancing were slim.  Out of the 350 videos submitted, DQ picked just 24 finalists and my video was one of them!  Dairy Queen is giving away 6 MINI COOPERS to the finalist videos that get the most votes on facebook.  So the calculator in my brain tells me that means I now have a 1 in 4 chance of winning a car!

Oh my friends…my dear, dear blog-reading friends.  I need you…I need you now more than ever.  Won’t you please help put your pal Beardy in one of those sweet, Blizzard themed (I want the Oreo one) Mini Coopers??  Votes alone determine the 6 winners.  Fortunately, the voting is being done through facebook which means it’s going to be really hard for anyone to cheat.  Plus, voting is incredibly easy to do if you have a facebook page.  All you have to do is click the VOTE FOR THIS VIDEO button while logged into your account.  No registration is needed.

Yes, Beardy's beard was briefly transformed into a pair of muttonchops last week

I can’t tell you how freaking stoked I would be if I won this contest.  I’d be so happy that I swear, I would straight up RETIRE from video contests where votes alone determine the winners.  So please, won’t you help me go out on a win?  If you cast a vote for my video, leave a comment on this post or send me an e-mail and I guarantee that if you’re ever in need of votes for a contest I’ll get ya’ back. Hell, I’ll even promote your video here on VCN!  To vote my video, click here:

Thanks everybody!  Check back in 2 weeks to see if I won!

Vote for Beardy in the “Success Yearbook” contest!

When it comes to entering video contests, I am the king of procrastinators. I’ve known about the “Success Yearbook” video contest being sponsored by Universitydecisions.com for three months now but I waited until the last week to shoot my entry. Votes are part of a video’s final score and the dealine to vote is March 31st at 11:59PM!!! So I need to hustle and get a few votes up on the board while I still can!  If you have 7 seconds to spare, I’d greatly appreciate it if you voted for my submission.

To vote, all you gotta do is follow this link:  Success-yearbook/Profile/Dlamx76

Then click the vote button and fill in the Captcha that pops up.  That’s it!

Look! It's Beardy with and without a beard!! Click the image to vote!

For this contest, I had to create a video describing a college “success story.”  Basically you’re supposed to explain how going to college helped you succeed in life.  But I thought I’d swing for the fences and do a Top 10 list of ways college made my life better.  I would absolutely lose my mind (with happiness) if I won this contest.  The prize is up to $10,000 to pay off the winner’s student loans.  I’ll tell you, if I could obliterate my student loan by winning this contest it would be one of the sweetest victories of my life.  So please, help a guy out and cast your vote before time runs out.  THANKS!!

Vote for the Regis & Kelly “Great Days” finalists

All week long, Regis and Kelly of Regis and Kelly Live (of course) have been announcing the finalists in their Great Days Start here video contest and it turns out that a long-time reader of VCN, Tim O. has made the cut.  His entry is absolutely, over the top.  Seriously, it blows all the other finalists out of the water.  Check it out:

Great Days Finalist.  Prize: $5,000 with a chance to win $15,000 more:

Pretty good huh?  Maybe Tim will be able to get a gig directing the next Old Spice commercial thanks to that.  But first things first, right now he’s in need of some votes.  This contest is being run in a very unusual way.  The winner will be picked via a public vote but voting only lasts about three days.  Here’s a message I got from Tim explaining how to how to cast your vote:

Click on the link below, then click on the Vote Now button at the bottom of the page…you will then be asked to log in or register…once that is done you can then vote for my video (you only have to register once and after you are registered you can just log in the next time).  You can vote once per day…the voting phase ends Sunday March 13th at 6pm EST.

3/15 UPDATE: Well, “the people” have spoken.  Here’s the big winner. To be frank, I don’t think this video should have even made the finals. It’s nowhere near as good as the other entries.

Grand Prize Winner.  Prize:  $20,000.
