Tongal’s ACE Hardware Winners

If you’ve noticed all the ads we’ve been running for Tongal.com you already know that they’ve been running some huge contests for some major-league companies lately.  One of their bigger clients is ACE Hardware and yesterday Tongal announced the winner of ACE’s “Customer Service Video Project.”  The goal in this contest was to shoot a video about how helpful ACE employees can be.  Here’s the spot that came out on top:

First Place Winner.  Prize:  $10,000:

Pretty good huh?  Looks really professional too.  I was keeping an eye on this contest because I actually entered this one myself.  I collaborated with my long-distance contest buddy HappyJoel Levinson; he created a song and I shot and edited a video for it.  We did manage to win a prize; $500.  But this was one of those times when I kind of knew I had missed the mark.  I think the video was cute but it was lacking pizazz.  You can’t tell from the video but the outside stuff was shot in the freezing rain.  But at least the shoot was a good excuse to try out my new camera gear.  I just bought an HVX200 last month and I’m really happy with it.  Now that I’m using a real video camera again I realize just how inhibiting DSLRs can be.  With the HVX I don’t need to worry about ISO numbers or syncing up audio in post or stuff going out of focus if I move the camera a foot closer to the subject.  I’m excited to shoot a lot more entries this year now that I don’t have to worry so much about the tech side of things.  Basically I’ll be able to just point and shoot.  Anywho, if you’d like to see the entry Joel and I did (or the rest of the winning spots) head here:  http://tongal.com/project/aceservice

Mike’s Hard Lemonade “Hard Sports” Winners

This summer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade asked their facebook fans to “Submit a humorous and original video demonstrating the determination, hustle and spirit you and/or your team bring to your favorite and fun “HARD SPORTS” activity, such as (but not limited to) kickball, dodgeball, ping pong, Ultimate Frisbee, or cornhole*.”  There was a public voting period but it was only run to determine a set of 20 finalists.  Then a panel of judges picked the top three winners.  First place was $10,000 to be used to support the winners sporting endeavorsSecond place was $5,000 and third was $2,500.  And as a bonus, the 17 non-winning finalists each recived a mike’s hard lemonade “Sponsorship Kit” that included stuff like Mike’s T-shirts, sweat bands and gym bags plus some sporting equipment.  Each of these kits had an AVR of $500.  So it was a pretty sweet runner-up prize.  Here’s the video that took the top prize.

Grand Prize Winner.  Prize:  $10,000:

Not too shabby. I really admire the fact that these guys decided to shoot in the rain. It really added to the wackiness of the video. If it had been me, I would have canceled the shoot for sure. So good for them for going for it.

Overall, this was a really nice of example of how to run a GOOD video contest on facebook. Yeah, there was public voting but there were 20 finalist slots so anybody who really cared could have made the second round pretty easily. And as I said, judges picked the winners so Mike’s was able to avoid pissing off a bunch of their fans by letting some cheater win the grand prize. And 17 runner up prizes worth $500 each really showed that Mike’s actually respected and appreciated all of their finalists. If by chance some contest organizer reads this post, I hope you’ll take a lesson from this contest. It was fun and fair and a good model to follow. The rules are still online if you want to read the fine print for yourself.

*I’m going to assume (and hope) that they type of corn-holing they are referring to is a game of bean bags.

Dairy Queen’s “Mini Blizzard Treatment” winners

Did you vote for me in Dairy Queen’s “Mini Blizzard Treatment” video contest? If so, thanks! I really appreciate the support. But….I didn’t win a Mini Cooper. And to be honest, I kind of knew my chances weren’t very good in this particular contest. (Some background: In the DQ contest, 24 finalists were picked and the 6 people who’s video got the most votes would win a Mini Cooper. The vote counts were hidden during the voting and the Top 6 videos were revealed last week.) Click here to see the 6 winning videos.

At first I tried really hard to get as many votes as possible. But after a few days I took the time to check out the competition. If you’re in a video contest where votes alone determine the winners, you should always do a little research about the people you’re up against. For instance, if the contest is being run on facebook (like the DQ contest was) then try and find out how many facebook friends your competitors have. Just search for their names and their profile will come up. And if it’s not totally set to private, you can see how many friends they have. I have a mere 220 facebook friends so when I saw that several of the finalists had more than 1,000 friends, I knew they’d be hard to beat.

Moving beyond facebook, I also checked twitter. I searched for terms like “Vote, DQ, contest, mini cooper.” And sure enough, I saw tweets from several people in the contest including one guy who had almost 4,900 twitter followers.  And after I did some more digging I discovered that this person was a semi-pro filmmaker with a gigantic and enthusiastic online fan base.  But as it turned out, maybe some of his fans were a little too enthusiastic.  To my surprise, this guy didn’t make the Top 6.  One of his teammates tweeted that their entry was disqualified for “getting too many votes.”  That could have been a joke but I don’t think it was.  I don’t know if they cheated or even if they really got disqualified.  But their entry recived hundreds of comments from people saying “I Voted!”  So I can’t imagine how they couldn’t have won.  Either they cheated and were disqualified or else most of the other contestants cheated in order to beat them.

But I digress.  After Facebook and Twitter the next place you should check is Google News. You can learn amazing things from google news. If you do a blog search you can see if any bloggers are promoting any entries. And if you search Google’s news feed you can see if any contestants have gotten the media to do a story on them.

The point of all this research is to help you decide whether or not it is worth it to try and get more votes in the contest. If you discover one of your competitors has 1,000 facebook friends, 3,000 twitter followers, and a blog that’s read by 20,000 people a month then you’ll know that you might be fighting a losing battle.

So after I did my research I knew that there were 3 or 4 finalists that could get in the top 6 without breaking a sweat. And it looked like there were 2 or 3 other contestants that had a really strong chance of making it too. Of course, I happen to run a semi-popular website (yes, this one) and I have A LOT of good contacts on the web that could help me get votes. So I was thinking I might be able to squeak into the Top 6.  I don’t know where I eventually ranked but I bet I came in 7th or 8th.

Even though I didn’t win a car, being in this contest was a really positive experience for me.  My campaign for votes had some very interesting and unexpected consequences.  I think this is one of those cases where a loss leads to an even greater (metaphorical) victory.  I can’t talk about some of the things that happened because of this contest but I will say this; the support I got from my family and friends and even the readers of this site really warmed my cockles.  It’s a very George-Baily-esque experience to have hundreds of people you’ve known for years rally behind you and wish you well.  I mean, people I haven’t talked to since high school voted for me.  Ex-girlfriends from 10 years ago voted for me.  Former employers and co-workers voted for me.  Random crew people I worked with on random projects 3 years voted for me.  Yeah, I know it only takes 20 seconds to vote in an online contest.  But it was nice to know that so many people I’ve crossed paths with cared enough to try and help me and then wrote me to let me know they still had my back.  So that was nice.  Plus, did you know that when you win a new car you get stuck paying like $7,000 in taxes on it!!  Pfffft….so man, did I dodge a bullet on that one or what?

As is the case with most voted-based video contests, most of the winning videos aren’t so great.  You can see all the results here.  But below I’ll post the best winner followed by the not-best winner.

One of Six Winners.  Prize: A Mini Cooper:

One of Six Winners. Prize: A Mini Cooper:

I have to say, I was totally shocked to see that 2nd video make the Top six. It was definitely not on my list of likely winners. The video didn’t get that many comments and the guy who made it has only 191 facebook friends. (only one vote per FB account counted, BTW) Also, no one blogged about his entry, no one tweeted about it and the media didn’t do any stories about it. So where the heck did all his votes come from?

2011 Crash the Super Bowl Ad Meter results!

Million Dollar Winner: Pug Attack

In the last six weeks I don’t think I’ve talked to a single filmmaker that entered the 2010/2011 Crash the Super Bowl contest that thought Doritos and Pepsi Max did a good job of picking their Top 10 finalists.  But the Super Bowl is over, the six winning commercials have aired and the Ad Meter results are in.  And it looks like the last laugh goes to Fritolay.  I totally did not see this coming but this was the most successful Crash the Super Bowl contest ever!  It was so successful that two filmmakers won bonus prizes and Fritolay came closer than ever before to taking all three top spots on the USA Today Ad Meter.  The two big winning commercials were Pug Attack which tied for first place on the Ad Meter with the Bud Light Dog Party ad and House Sitting which (sort of) came in third.  House Sitting was technically the 4th most-liked ad of the night but because of the first place tie you could argue that House Sitting scored the #3 spot on the ad meter.  And I guess someone did argue that because Doritos has decided to pay the director of House sitting the #3 spot’s bonus.  So Pug Attack wins an extra Million Dollars and House Sitting wins $400,000 making this year’s Crash the biggest video contest ever! Oh and let’s not forget that the director of Pug Attack also wins the chance to film a big budget commercial for Pepsi Max and Doritos later this year.

$400K winner: House Sitting

In total, Fritolay aired 3 Doritos commercials and 3 Pepsi Max commercials as promised.  But I was really surprised to see that 5 of the 6 CTSB winners aired during the first quarter.  The earlier an ad airs, the better chance it has of scoring well on the ad meter.  I’ve heard a lot of conspiracy theories this year from non-winning contestants and one was that Fritolay didn’t really want to have to pay out all that bonus money.  Well, I think we can put that theory to rest.  By placing the 5 strongest ads in the first quarter, Fritolay proved that they REALLY wanted to take all three spots on the Ad Meter.  And if they didn’t want to pay out too much in bonuses there’s no way they would have given the director of House Sitting the third place prize.  It’s awesome that they did but to be fair, House Sitting was not actually the the 3rd highest rated commercial of the game.  But like I said, good for doritos for being generous when they didn’t have to.  To recap, here’s a list of all of the ads that aired last night.  They are in the order they ran in and their “rank” is where they landed on the ad meter.  To see the winning and non-winning ads, head here.

2011 CRASH THE SUPER BOWL WINNERS and AD METER SCORES

1.  Pug Attack.  SCORE: 8.35.  RANK:  Tie for #1

2.  The Best Part.  SCORE:  7.27. RANK:  #14

3.  Love Hurts.  SCORE:  7.56. RANK:  #5

4.  House Sitting. SCORE:  7.68.  RANK:  #4

5. Torpedo Cooler. SCORE:  6.68. RANK:  #24

6. First Date.  SCORE:  7.52. RANK:  #7

You can see all the Ad Meter results here.  Last week I posted my predictions for which 6 ads would air during the big game and I managed to get 5 out of 6 right. ( The only one I missed was “First Date.”)  I gotta admit though, I was way off on most of my other predictions.  I never in a million years expected 4 CTSB finalist ads to air in the To 10.  And I really thought a few ads were totally going to tank on the ad meter.  I mean, First Date took 7th place!  Who could have seen that coming!?  I’m totally amazed at how well that spot did.  I always thought it was amusing and well written but I assumed its low production values would hurt it’s score.

So why did this year’s crop of CTSB winners do SO WELL in the Ad Meter polling?  There are a couple reasons I think:

1.  Timing. Focus groups are excited during the 1st quarter and jaded and tired by the 3rd.  So Fritolay was able to “buy” some success by cramming the first quarter full of ads. That forced other companies to air their big ads later on and that hurt their scores.  For example, if an ad like the Rosanne/Snickers commercial had aired in the first quarter instead of late in the 2nd, I bet it would have made the Top 5.

2.  Crappy Bud Light Ads. Prior to the Crash the Super Bowl contest, Bud Light scored the #1 spot on the ad meter for like 10 years in a row.  They tied for first this year but most of their 2011 commercials were pretty lame.  (that one with the cowboys singing “Tiny Dancer” was the suckiest of the bunch)  So one reason Pepsi Max and Doritos ads scored well is because Bud Light really tanked it this year.

3.  Few “funny” commercials. When you think of Super Bowl commercials, you think comedy.  But there were very few simple, funny 30 second ads this year.  There were tons of cool car commercials and movie trailers and two-minute long documentaries about the re-birth of Detroit but only funny commercials do well on the ad meter.

4.  Most companies don’t seem to care about the ad meter anymore. Doritos, Pepsi, Budweiser, careerbuilder and Snickers are some of the only companies that seem to actually try to make “the #1 Super Bowl commercial.”  I think other ad firms may have ceded ad meter victory to fritolay and focused on making ads with “viral” appeal.  In a way, viral views the week after the Super Bowl is the new “contest” for advertisers.

5.  The best CTSB ads wound up airing. Luckily for Fritolay, none of the ads that wouldn’t have done well on the ad meter made it to air.  Plus, the spots that did run held up really well on TV.  I really didn’t like some of the finalist choices but I gotta admit, when you see them play of TV it’s a totally different experience.  For example, I thought “The Best Part” might be too gross for the Super Bowl.  But when the ad actually aired yesterday it came off as being pretty awesome.  So ahem…maybe fritolay did a better job than a lot of us thought.

6.  The Snowglobe Effect. There’s not really an appropriate name for this theory so let’s call it “The SnowGlobe Effect” in honor of The Herbert Brother’s SnowGlobe-themed 2008 CTSB entry that wound up being the first consumer-created commercial to take the #1 spot on the ad meter.  I think one of the primary reasons this year’s crop of Crash the Super Bowl spots scored so well is BECAUSE they were part of the Crash the Super Bowl Contest.  The USA Today Ad Meter has become a huge part of the Crash.  Any person who actually gets into one of the USA Today’s focus groups has got to know what is at stake for the “average Joes” who made Doritos and Pepsi Max ads.  So, I think the focus groups were kinder to the CTSB entries because they wanted to see the “little guys” do well and maybe win a million bucks.

So…Fritolay came super close to nailing the Top 3 spots in the Ad Meter and if the contest happens again next year, they might actually be able to pull it off.  I’ve been thinking that this might be the last year the company ran the Crash.  But after last night’s amazing results I can’t see how they wouldn’t bring it back.  In fact, I think they’ll probably go balls to the wall next year and REALLY try to “take the top 3.”  You’ve only got 9 months until the traditional early November deadline so you better start planning for 2012.

Live Crash the Super Bowl results

The second quarter of the Super Bowl is just starting but surprisingly, 5 Crash the Super Bowl finalist ads have already aired!   So I guess there’s just one spot left to go.  I really expected Fritolay to spread them out a little more.  But these early airings must mean that Pepsi and Doritos genuinely and really want these commercials to land in the top 3 on the USA Today Ad Meter.  If you missed a commercial break making a chicken wing run, here are the results so far.  These are the ads that aired tonight in the order they ran.  Titles in Red are Doritos ads and titles in Blue are for Pepsi Max.  Remember, you can see all of this year’s CTSB finalists here.

2011 CRASH THE SUPER BOWL WINNERS and AD METER SCORES

1.  Pug Attack.  SCORE: 8.35.  RANK:  Tie for #1

2.  The Best Part.  SCORE:  7.27. RANK:  #14

3.  Love Hurts.  SCORE:  7.56. RANK:  #5

4.  House Sitting.  SCORE:  7.68.  RANK:  #4

5. Torpedo Cooler. SCORE:  6.68. RANK:  #24

6. First Date.  SCORE:  7.52. RANK:  #7

UPDATE:  The ad meter scores are in and the results are unbelievable!  I did not see this coming but the Crash the Super Bowl winners came closer than ever before to winning the 5 million dollar bonus.  Pug Attack tied with the Bud Light Dog Party ad for first place.  House Sitting was the #4 ad of the night and Love Hurts was ranked #5.  Even though he won on a tie, the director of Pug Attack will receive a One Million Dollar bonus.  Check back with us tomorrow and we’ll go over the results in more detail.

Crash the Super Bowl winners + Ad Meter results!

Super Bowl XLIV just ended and that means that the 2010 installment of Doritos’ Crash the Super Bowl contest is finally over too. All three winning commercials aired in the first quarter but SURPRISE!…Doritos snuck one more Crash the Superbowl finalist in during the 4th quarter. And holy crap, the USA Today Ad Meter results have just come in and SURPRISE again! One of the Crash the Superbowl ads cracked the top 3! I’ll post all the numbers below but first here are the official winners in the order they ran. From what I’ve read, the order that the commercials aired reflect which entries got the most, second most and third most votes last month.

1. Underdog. Created by Nick Dimondi/Joshua Svoboda

2. House Rules. Created by Joelle de Jesus

3. Casket. Created by Kevin T. Willson

SURPRISE BONUS AD. Snack Attack Samurai. Created by Ben Krueger

A few days ago I explained here and here that it looked like Doritos had already revealed the names of the Crash the Super Bowl entries that were going to air tonight. The finalist entries that were publicly identified as destined for air last week were Snack Attack Samurai, Kids These Days and Casket. Looks like those predictions were off by one. But hey, way back in December, before the finalists were even announced, we predicted in this post that “Underdog” would go all the way this year. So hurray for us!

UPDATE: Oh snap!!!! The Ad Meter results are in and UNDERDOG was rated the second best commercial of the entire game right after the Betty White/Snickers spot! That means the makers of Underdog, 5 Points Productions will be receiving a $600,000 bonus from Doritos. As for the other three Crash the Super Bowl entries that aired tonight….well, they didn’t fare so well. None of them even cracked the top 10. Here are the numbers.

1. Underdog. Ad Meter Score: 8.27. Ad Meter Rank: #2

2. House Rules. Ad Meter Score: 7.12. Ad Meter Rank: #11

3. Casket. Ad Meter Score: 7.00. Ad Meter Rank: #14

4. Snack Attack Samurai. Ad Meter Score: 6.79. Rank: #17

Now even though none of the other ads made the top 3, the scores are still quite impressive. After all, there were 60 commercials ranked by the ad meter. Plus since Snack Attack Samurai aired so late in the game I bet its score suffered because the focus groups in the Ad Meter polling were probably a little burnt out by then. You can see the full list of ad meter results here: USA Today Ad Meter.

So what did we learn tonight? Well, we learned that Beardy is a genius! We totally called this one. Over the last few weeks we’ve repeatedly claimed that “Underdog” was going to make it to the top three and not only that, we predicted that it was the only one of the six finalists that had a chance of doing so.

Seriously though, now that the dust is settling it’s clear that the big winner of the 2010 installment of the CTSB contest is 5 Points Productions. Though the Crash the Super Bowl contest has only been run three times, that plucky team of filmmakers from North Carolina have now won the competition TWICE! The 5 Points entry “Live the Flavor” won the first installment of the CTSB contest and aired during the 2007 Super Bowl. Now their entry “Underdog” has also came out on top. Plus they were the first filmmakers ever to get TWO entries in the finals in one year!!  (The other was Kids These Days)  That’s three unbelievable achievements so it looks like Doritos should get ready to crown them as the new, “Kings of the Crash.”  They’ve earned it.

Yesterday Infolinks, the online in-text advertising company, announced the 3 winners of their “Infolinks Challenge.”  The premise of the contest was that participants should create a video showcasing “crazy, creative and funny ideas of making money online.”  Overall I think the top three videos are good.  Here they are:

First Place.  Prize:  $5,000

Second Place.  Prize:  $1,000

Third Place.  Prize:  $500
