Folgers announces their 2013 Jingle Contest winner

Folgers’ annual jingle contest doesn’t usually get much attention but it’s actually one of the biggest video contests in the world.  In 2011, the contest received more than 3,000 entries.  Now that I think about it, this year’s Crash the Super Bowl contest only got about 3,000 submissions.  So it’s very possible that the 2013 Folgers Jingle contest was BIGGER than the 2013 Doritos contest.  That’s kind of surprising since Doritos literally offers millions of dollars in prizes in “The Crash” but Folgers only gives out one prize of $25,000.  Folgers probably gets so many entries because their contest is so easy to enter.  You don’t have to hire actors or write a script.  All you have to do is perform your own version of the classic “The Best Part of Waking Up…” jingle.  Oh my God.  Can you imagine being a judge in that contest?  I’d never want to drink a drop of coffee again after hearing thousands of people perform the same song over and over and over.

The judges that didn’t go insane selected and announced a slate of 10 finalists back in March.  Then there was a month-long public voting period.  But…votes didn’t actually determine the winner in this contest.  The judges made the final pick and contests just got a few extra points if they did well in the voting.  The winning musician is named Sawyer Frye and he’s from Carthage, NC.  Here’s his video:

Folger’s Grand Prize Winner.  Prize: $25,000:

Holy crap.  Wait a second, that was sort of amazing, wasn’t it?  I just now realized that I recognized the guy who won that contest.  Last fall I did a blog post about a music video he did that won a contest sponsored by FireHouse subs.  His FireHouse entry was so good that I said something like “If this guy keeps entering contests he’s going to make a fortune.”  Guess I was right about something for a change!

Folgers really milked this contest and they made all of the finalists appear in little biographical videos.  If you want to watch any of these or if you want to see the other nominated jingles, head here.

5 predictions for the 2013 Crash the Super Bowl finals

This year’s installment of the Crash the Super Bowl contest was kind of a strange one.  For some reason there was a massive drop in the number of submissions received.  Last year Doritos got more than 6,000 entries for the Crash.  But this year they only got about 2,800 entries.  I have a pretty good idea why participation for the contest dropped and I’ll be covering that issue in a post in early January.  For now I just want to focus on my list of predictions for the 2013.  Because there were a lot fewer entries I had a really hard time finding “contenders” that might have a shot of making Doritos official Top 5.  But I have to say, some of the contenders I did find are incredibly strong.  Usually I pick entries that I think the CTSB judges might like but this year I was able to find several ads that anybody would love.  If Doritos’ list of finalists includes a few of these ads they will have made some really excellent choices.  Ok, so here now are my 5 predictions for the 2013 Crash the Super Bowl finals.  Click on the images below to watch these videos on Facebook.  Let’s start with a submission that is actually one of my favorite Crash the Super Bowl ads EVER:

Goat 4 Sale

Goat 4 Sale:  If you don’t love this commercial you should go see a cardiologist because you have no heart!  I totally love this entry but it also bums be out.  I happened to find this submission when I went to the contest page and searched for videos about goats.  Why would I do that?  Because this year I tried to make a CTSB entry about goats!  I tried to think of an animal that was cuter and funnier than a dog and I came up with goats.  Our goats wouldn’t cooperate though so we had to abandon the shoot.  But my crew and I were planning on trying again next summer.  So if this ad makes the finals, Doritos probably wouldn’t pick two goat commercials two years in a row.  But oh well. This entry deserves to make the top 5 more than almost any CTSB entry I have ever seen.  It’s just a PERFECT little short film.   I will be amazed if Doritos doesn’t pick this one.  Not only is “Goat 4 Sale” a funny video, it’s actually a great commercial since Doritos get a ton of screen time.  So this entry is funny and entertaining and it actually makes me want to buy the featured product….and a goat.

It’s a Trap!

IT’S A TRAP:  And here’s another one that I love!  This is a great example of what a really good CTSB submission should look like.  It’s got a bearded goofball, a simple premise, very little dialogue, a huge, shocking surprise and some cute animals.  And like “Goat 4 Sale” it actually does a good job of selling Doritos.  “Every living creature loves Doritos!”  What more needs to be said?

Road Trip

Road Trip:  Usually I get kind of annoyed when the same filmmakers make the finals over and over. But like I said, this year the pickings are kind of slim so I’m gonna cut the Crash judges some slack.  Road Trip was made by Tyler Dixon who is a TWO-TIME crash the super bowl finalist.  He made the top 5 in 2011 with his enry and he made it again in 2012 with .   I’m not really in love with “Road Trip” but it’s really good and I think the judges might pick this one because it would probably score really well on the USA Today Ad Meter.  Doritos actually does test screenings of their potential finalists before they make their final picks and I think focus groups are gonna flip for that cute little kid and that hilarious little dog.  So high focus group scores might just get this one in the Top 5.

Blow Granny, Blow

Blow Granny, Blow:  Here’s another ad made by a former finalist that I think deserves to make the top 5.  “Blow Granny, Blow” was created by Brad Bosley who made  which was the only 2011 Pepsi Max finalist that I actually liked.  Blow Granny, Blow is really professional-looking and it just feels like something you’d see on TV.  And again, it’s another spot that would probably do really well with focus groups.  It’s got a fantastic grumpy old lady, weird, surprising action and funny shots of people’s faces flopping in the wind.  I sort of hope this one makes it just t because it’d be nice if one of the finalist slots went to an ad that didn’t star an animal.

Great Lengths

Great Lengths:  This one is kind of my dark horse, wild card pick.  It’s entertaining and cute and funny but it’s nothing fancy and it doesn’t have a big twist or shocking gags.  But to me it really just feels like a Crash the Super Bowl finalist.  And I think kids would freaking go crazy for this commercial.  This is the kind of video that a 6 year old kid would make their mom play 10 times in a row.

So that’s my list.  As a little bonus, here are a few honorable mentions that I think also have an ok shot of making the finals: , , and .  Remember, the real winners will be revealed on January 2nd.  Be sure to check back here to see how accurate my predictions were!

UPDATE: The CTSB rules say that Doritos would announce the finalists at (or anytime after) noon on January 2nd. But it turns out the reveal isn’t happening until at 8PM on January 3rd.

Oatshake jingle winner

Last week I posted about a musician named “Sawyer F” who won the grand prize in the Firehouse subs video contest.  The guy’s song was so I good that I mentioned that he could totally clean up if he wrote more songs for other video contests.  I was just looking around for some recent winners I could post and it turns out that Firehouse subs guy has already won another jingle video contest.  This time it was for the Oatshake jingle competition:

Grand Prize Winner.  Prize:  $2,000:

Once again, that was pretty damn good.  This dude is going to become the Justin Bieber of video contests and make a bazillion dollars.

Speedstick’s “Don’t Sweat it, Hande it” winners

Yo, WTF is going on over on Tongal?  In the last few weeks there’s been just an avalanche of new contests being announced on that site.  I just checked and they’ve got 13 open contests right now.  I really need to do more entries for them.  One contest I meant to enter was the “Don’t Sweat it, Handle it” contest that Tognal ran for SpeedStick.  But of course I forgot and the contest is long over.  Here’s the pretty funny video that won the grand prize.

First Place Winner.  Prize:  $12,500:

And a special congratulations goes out to friend of VCN Jared Anderson who scored the #2 spot in this contest!

Second Place Winner.  Prize.  $4,000

Funny stuff.  Actually there were a lot of great winners in this contest.  You can see them all here.  If you feel like a dope for missing this one, guess what….Tongal is running a second “Don’t Sweat it, Handle it” contest right now.  But this time the winning video will feature a voice over from actor Danny Purdi who of course plays Abed on Community.  Details for that one are right here.

Tongal’s ACE Hardware Winners

If you’ve noticed all the ads we’ve been running for Tongal.com you already know that they’ve been running some huge contests for some major-league companies lately.  One of their bigger clients is ACE Hardware and yesterday Tongal announced the winner of ACE’s “Customer Service Video Project.”  The goal in this contest was to shoot a video about how helpful ACE employees can be.  Here’s the spot that came out on top:

First Place Winner.  Prize:  $10,000:

Pretty good huh?  Looks really professional too.  I was keeping an eye on this contest because I actually entered this one myself.  I collaborated with my long-distance contest buddy HappyJoel Levinson; he created a song and I shot and edited a video for it.  We did manage to win a prize; $500.  But this was one of those times when I kind of knew I had missed the mark.  I think the video was cute but it was lacking pizazz.  You can’t tell from the video but the outside stuff was shot in the freezing rain.  But at least the shoot was a good excuse to try out my new camera gear.  I just bought an HVX200 last month and I’m really happy with it.  Now that I’m using a real video camera again I realize just how inhibiting DSLRs can be.  With the HVX I don’t need to worry about ISO numbers or syncing up audio in post or stuff going out of focus if I move the camera a foot closer to the subject.  I’m excited to shoot a lot more entries this year now that I don’t have to worry so much about the tech side of things.  Basically I’ll be able to just point and shoot.  Anywho, if you’d like to see the entry Joel and I did (or the rest of the winning spots) head here:  http://tongal.com/project/aceservice

Mike’s Hard Lemonade “Hard Sports” Winners

This summer, asked their facebook fans to “Submit a humorous and original video demonstrating the determination, hustle and spirit you and/or your team bring to your favorite and fun “HARD SPORTS” activity, such as (but not limited to) kickball, dodgeball, ping pong, Ultimate Frisbee, or cornhole*.”  There was a public voting period but it was only run to determine a set of 20 finalists.  Then a panel of judges picked the top three winners.  First place was $10,000 to be used to support the winners sporting endeavors Second place was $5,000 and third was $2,500.  And as a bonus, the 17 non-winning finalists each recived a mike’s hard lemonade “Sponsorship Kit” that included stuff like Mike’s T-shirts, sweat bands and gym bags plus some sporting equipment.  Each of these kits had an AVR of $500.  So it was a pretty sweet runner-up prize.  Here’s the video that took the top prize.

Grand Prize Winner.  Prize:  $10,000:

Not too shabby. I really admire the fact that these guys decided to shoot in the rain. It really added to the wackiness of the video. If it had been me, I would have canceled the shoot for sure. So good for them for going for it.

Overall, this was a really nice of example of how to run a GOOD video contest on facebook. Yeah, there was public voting but there were 20 finalist slots so anybody who really cared could have made the second round pretty easily. And as I said, judges picked the winners so Mike’s was able to avoid pissing off a bunch of their fans by letting some cheater win the grand prize. And 17 runner up prizes worth $500 each really showed that Mike’s actually respected and appreciated all of their finalists. If by chance some contest organizer reads this post, I hope you’ll take a lesson from this contest. It was fun and fair and a good model to follow. The rules are still online if you want to read the fine print for yourself.

*I’m going to assume (and hope) that they type of corn-holing they are referring to is a game of bean bags.

Dairy Queen’s “Mini Blizzard Treatment” winners

Did you vote for me in Dairy Queen’s “Mini Blizzard Treatment” video contest? If so, thanks! I really appreciate the support. But….I didn’t win a Mini Cooper. And to be honest, I kind of knew my chances weren’t very good in this particular contest. (Some background: In the DQ contest, 24 finalists were picked and the 6 people who’s video got the most votes would win a Mini Cooper. The vote counts were hidden during the voting and the Top 6 videos were revealed last week.) Click here to see the 6 winning videos.

At first I tried really hard to get as many votes as possible. But after a few days I took the time to check out the competition. If you’re in a video contest where votes alone determine the winners, you should always do a little research about the people you’re up against. For instance, if the contest is being run on facebook (like the DQ contest was) then try and find out how many facebook friends your competitors have. Just search for their names and their profile will come up. And if it’s not totally set to private, you can see how many friends they have. I have a mere 220 facebook friends so when I saw that several of the finalists had more than 1,000 friends, I knew they’d be hard to beat.

Moving beyond facebook, I also checked twitter. I searched for terms like “Vote, DQ, contest, mini cooper.” And sure enough, I saw tweets from several people in the contest including one guy who had almost 4,900 twitter followers.  And after I did some more digging I discovered that this person was a semi-pro filmmaker with a gigantic and enthusiastic online fan base.  But as it turned out, maybe some of his fans were a little too enthusiastic.  To my surprise, this guy didn’t make the Top 6.  One of his teammates tweeted that their entry was disqualified for “getting too many votes.”  That could have been a joke but I don’t think it was.  I don’t know if they cheated or even if they really got disqualified.  But their entry recived hundreds of comments from people saying “I Voted!”  So I can’t imagine how they couldn’t have won.  Either they cheated and were disqualified or else most of the other contestants cheated in order to beat them.

But I digress.  After Facebook and Twitter the next place you should check is Google News. You can learn amazing things from google news. If you do a blog search you can see if any bloggers are promoting any entries. And if you search Google’s news feed you can see if any contestants have gotten the media to do a story on them.

The point of all this research is to help you decide whether or not it is worth it to try and get more votes in the contest. If you discover one of your competitors has 1,000 facebook friends, 3,000 twitter followers, and a blog that’s read by 20,000 people a month then you’ll know that you might be fighting a losing battle.

So after I did my research I knew that there were 3 or 4 finalists that could get in the top 6 without breaking a sweat. And it looked like there were 2 or 3 other contestants that had a really strong chance of making it too. Of course, I happen to run a semi-popular website (yes, this one) and I have A LOT of good contacts on the web that could help me get votes. So I was thinking I might be able to squeak into the Top 6.  I don’t know where I eventually ranked but I bet I came in 7th or 8th.

Even though I didn’t win a car, being in this contest was a really positive experience for me.  My campaign for votes had some very interesting and unexpected consequences.  I think this is one of those cases where a loss leads to an even greater (metaphorical) victory.  I can’t talk about some of the things that happened because of this contest but I will say this; the support I got from my family and friends and even the readers of this site really warmed my cockles.  It’s a very George-Baily-esque experience to have hundreds of people you’ve known for years rally behind you and wish you well.  I mean, people I haven’t talked to since high school voted for me.  Ex-girlfriends from 10 years ago voted for me.  Former employers and co-workers voted for me.  Random crew people I worked with on random projects 3 years voted for me.  Yeah, I know it only takes 20 seconds to vote in an online contest.  But it was nice to know that so many people I’ve crossed paths with cared enough to try and help me and then wrote me to let me know they still had my back.  So that was nice.  Plus, did you know that when you win a new car you get stuck paying like $7,000 in taxes on it!!  Pfffft….so man, did I dodge a bullet on that one or what?

As is the case with most voted-based video contests, most of the winning videos aren’t so great.  You can see all the results here.  But below I’ll post the best winner followed by the not-best winner.

One of Six Winners.  Prize: A Mini Cooper:

One of Six Winners. Prize: A Mini Cooper:

I have to say, I was totally shocked to see that 2nd video make the Top six. It was definitely not on my list of likely winners. The video didn’t get that many comments and the guy who made it has only 191 facebook friends. (only one vote per FB account counted, BTW) Also, no one blogged about his entry, no one tweeted about it and the media didn’t do any stories about it. So where the heck did all his votes come from?
