After 8 years, Youtube is ready to select a winner…

Today is April 1st, 2013 which means that Youtube.com’s 8 year submission period has finally come to a close.  Starting today, youtube’s judges will review all of the entries they’ve received since 2005 and then they will announce their pick for the “best video in the world” in 2023.  Youtube has surely been the biggest video contest in history and we’ll be covering the judging process closely over the next 10 years.  Check out the video below for the full story:

I could really use a new mp3 player and the $500 stipend would be pretty sweet too. I’ve submitted probably 130 entries to this contest since I joined youtube in 2006 so I think I have a pretty decent shot at winning the grand prize.

UPDATE!  I logged into facebook today and checked my video manager.  Turns out every single video I have ever uploaded to youtube has been nominated for the grand prize! (check your youtube account, I bet you were too.) The site  is going to post more details about the contest in a live update later today.  Head here for more info:

I got suckered into one of their April Fools Day pranks a few years ago, when there was a “Send Me To Mars” video contest (I think hosted by Google back then.) I made an entry and everything, then realized to late I’d been had.

    Alas.

Joel, you should have sued to get the prize they promised. Since there’s no way they could actually send you to mars, they would have had to pay you the ARV of the trip which would have been about 5 billion dollars.
