We want to see your Crash the Super Bowl entries!

Time's up!

Well D (for Doritos) is finally here.  Right now it’s 4PM on November 21st which means you only have eight hours left to submit your 2011 Crash the Super Bowl entries.   And then tomorrow the wait begins!  I get a lot of e-mails this time of year and usually people want to know when Doritos will contact the finalists.  The official rules state that Doritos will notify the finalists within 6 weeks.  But 6 weeks from today happens to be Monday, January 2nd.  During the last installment of The Crash, the finalists were announced on January 3rd.  I’ve talked to a number of past finalists and it seems like Doritos usually calls the winners (yes, they’ll actually call you if you make the top 5) just before Christmas.  But the contest did start a little later than usual this year so what the heck do I know.

Right now, there are already more than 1,500 submissions posted in CTSB gallery.  But when the orange dust settles I bet there will be close to 2,800 entries.  That’s a lot less than in year’s past but the lower number is probably because this year, the contest moderators have been doing a great job of keeping people from uploading multiple entries.  In past installments, it seemed like every 10th video was a repeat.  I guess people uploaded the same videos over and over because they weren’t sure if their submissions went though.

But 2,800 submissions is still a crazy amount.   And guess what?  This year I have made it my mission to watch every, single CTSB entry!  If you watched 2,800 thirty-second commercials in a row, it would take you 23.33 hours to get through them all.  But to be honest, I’m not watching every entry from start to finish.  In fact, I usually click the “next” button on most entries after about 10 seconds.  You see, my goal is to find all the submissions that have a good chance of making it to the Top 5.  So if an entry has major technical problems that I suspect will keep it out of the running, I skip it.  And after like 15 seconds if I’m not hooked I usually move on to the next video.

This method saves me a lot of time but it isn’t exactly thorough.  Sometimes I get in the zone and I skip past videos before I really give them a chance.  So readers, I need your help.  If you see a really awesome Crash the Super Bowl entry, let me know!  And yes, you can send me your own submission if you think it’s especially great.  In about two weeks I will post a list of all my favorite 2011 CTSB submissions.  How long will the list be?  I have no idea!  Instead of doing like a “Top 50″ I’m just going to link to every ad that I think is good enough to win….and maybe I’ll throw a few personal favorites in there as well.

So if you have a great entry you want to show me, click the comment button and post the link.  Or you can e-mail me at .  As always, I’m happy to do a mini-review of every ad you guys send me.  I’ll try and be gentle but I’ll also be honest.  Just a couple rules; please, don’t ask me to critique an entry that you didn’t help create.  Also, I can only do public critiques.  So if you want me to give you notes on your submission, post it in the comments section rather than e-mailing it to me.  And finally, Full Disclosure: I did shoot a CTSB entry of my own but I will try and be objective and fair….even though my entry is easily the best this year!

Good luck everybody.  If you get a call from Doritos saying that you made the finals, be sure to let me know!  Yea sure, that would probably get you disqualified but I totally promise to keep your secret…

Oh I forgot it’s called “Sibling Rivalry”

    Thanks for checking it out

  2. Beardy says:

    Anderson Carman,

Game Changer: Hmm, I kind of don’t really exactly get this spot. It’s very well done though and I’m impressed by how it looks. But I think this is too subtle for the super bowl. I think if this appeared on screen during a loud super bowl party a lot of people would be left scratching their heads. I think relying on viewers to read half of the commercial wouldn’t go over well. Also, I think the “nerdy” guy was a little too nerdy. He was actually dressed like a hipster! If that guy wore that outfit out on a Saturday night he’d probably get a lot of props for his ironic fashion sense!

But like I said, it’s kind of cool to watch. If I were you I’d tweak this idea and re-do it for a different video contest.

    Jason Beeber,

Best Day Ever: Obviously the three actresses in this entry are very attractive. But if they weren’t, what would set this spot apart from the rest of the crowd? It felt like the script was a nice first draft. A few re-writes and this could have evolved into something bigger and funnier. I think the revelation that the woman gave the pets Doritos should have happened at about the 15 second mark. Then the rest of the ad could have been spent showing the wackiness that ensued because of the woman’s actions.

    Amyboo,

More of These: This is very cute and I like the punchline. It’s just a tiny bit risqué but it wouldn’t really offend anyone. Very nice casting too. A few issues: I have seen a whole bunch of entries about kids who try and plant Doritos. And I feel like a jerk for pointing out the obvious but the sound on this spot isn’t great. Finally, I think the humor isn’t big enough for the super bowl. It’s cute but not laugh out loud funny.

    Almex,

Never Get Old: I’m going to be a little tough on this ad. First off, it looks great and I like the editing. But the subject matter is very cliché. Old people going wild because they love a product is one of the most common commercial tropes. It’s just been done so many times I don’t think any variation on this concept could seem original. The gag is so common that it’s come to symbolize a “cliché commercial idea.” So even though this ad looks great and has a lot of good action, I don’t think Dortios could ever pick it. Sorry.

    Kathy,

Gote ‘Em: This ad is kind of fun and even a little suspenseful. I really liked that shot in the hallway. But the punchline was easy to predict. I think it would have been great if you had done some kind of big twist at the end. Like maybe the man could get the Doritos back at the 20 second mark and then he somehow gets revenge on the burglar. Or maybe he could have caught the burglar in some crazy way.

    Mr. Moto,

Babydoll: Of all the ads I’ve been sent, I think this is one of my favorites. Very nice job. The production values are great, the actress playing “the doll” is super sexy, the story is simple but amusing and the little girl gave a perfect and realistic performance. And the “button” at the end is the perfect topper. I think there are only two problems with this ad. The dad’s “huh?” at the end is pretty cheesy. A really funny exclamation from him there would have been great. The other problem is more serious. This ad might be a little too hot for the super bowl. I could see a little ass cheek as the “doll” crawled across the counter. Ok, one other issue: I’m not sure this fits with the kind of ads Doritos usually picks. If you wanted to make this more Crash-the-super-bowl-y there should have been some big slapstick joke at the end. This is a great entry but it might not be what the judges are looking for. But if I were a judge, this would at least make my short list.

    Chad,

Gimme some more Doritos: Well, that was pretty awesome. If you submitted this ad to a smaller video contest it would win easily. The music is great, the actors are funny and the shot of the tastebuds was just what the spot needed to push it over the top. You might have one potential problem though. I’m not 100% sure but I THINK that rapping and singing over the provided music might not be allowed. You might want to check the CTSB forum just to be sure. If it’s ok, I can envision this spot making the Top 5.

    Hi Beardy!

I’ve been checking out the other posts — there’s some pretty funny spots up here! Lots of competition this year.

I’d love to get some feedback on my entry titled “Office Pop”. I’m an old-school Popper & my wife does the Robot, so we figured it was a good hook for the contest. Here’s the link:

  8. Beardy says:

I’m killing time before I leave for Grandma’s house (yes, that’s actually where I’m going today) so I thought I’d do a few quick reviews.

    Adam Franklin,

Anniversary: I would have to say this is one of the better ads I’ve seen. It moves quickly and has lots of action. It’s got very little dialogue and lots of slapstick which is what Doritos likes. I’m going to be adding this one to my list of favorites. Now….having said all that, the comedy in this spot didn’t really work for me. I saw the punchline coming as soon as the guy started cooking. I was really hoping for some insane twist at the end. I think you were really close to have a top tier entry. The concept is pretty standard so it really needed something original and out of the blue to put if over the top.

Pinata: Ok, this one is closer to the mark. Again, lots of fun action and tons of small gags. You really seem to know what the CTSB judges like. The shot where the kid says “what’s going on!” takes this ad to another level. I would believe it if this one made the finals. But once again, the idea is pretty standard. Every year there are a whole bunch of ads submitted about Pinatas filled with Doritos. And like the last entry, I think this needed something weird and out of the blue to make it really orginal. Nice job on both spots though.

    Brain Kaufman,

Road Pirates: I really like this concept. But to be honest, I think your dreamed a little too big on this one. The green screen just doesn’t look to great. This would be a very funny big-budget commercial. Some ideas just need a lot of money to work. And there is another problem with this ad. It is VERY similar to something that happened on an episode of family guy. Peter dressed as a pirate and him and some pirate friends drove down the road and Peter jumped onto another car to plunder it. Then he and the driver fought over his cargo. If you have never seen that episode of family guy then this is just an unfortunate coincidence. But it’s a very unique idea so if you did get the idea from Family Guy that would be plagiarism. And that would be very bad.

    Brian Howell,

Happy Ending: This was cute and looked pretty good but I don’t think it’s the kind of thing Dortios is looking for for the Super Bowl. You had a good kernel of an idea and I think you needed to multiple it by like 10 (if that makes any sense) A wild and crazy snow-white themed ad could do really well in this contest. But it would have to be really over the top. It would have to be epic. So I’d say next time, think big….super bowl big.

    Greg Fleisher,

Sibling Rivalry: First, let me just say that the slow motion shots are awesome. Second, this entry seems like a total rip off of an ad that made the CTSB finals two years ago. It was called “The SmackOut” and it was about two guys in a slapping contest to decide who got the last dorito. And in the other ad, there were even two girls who had more Doritos that tried to stop the fight. If you have seen the smack out, you pretty much just copied the ad and added the “brother vs brother” angle. If you have never seen The Smackout, this is just an unlucky coincidence and you should have done some researched and watched the past winners. I have to ask, did you see the smackout before you made this ad? Here it is, by the way:

Ok, turkey time. More reviews to come….

  9. greg fleisher says:

I am sitting here with my jaw dropped… No I had not seen it! Or I just don’t remember it and it just got soaked up by my subconscious. I just hope the slow-mo gives it enough of a twist? Plus the girls getting caught up in the action… and the dog? but….

Chris Le – your ad is so pro! The effects are amazing! Well done. I’m only new to the game, have only made 2 ads for these competitions. Probably well amateur, but welcome some constructive pointers! Cheers, Simone ;)

  17. Brian Kaufman says:

Dang, I had no idea about the family guy bit. When was this? I only watched Family Guy in its original run (1999-2003). Bummer. I’m surprised none of my friends had heard of it either.

  18. Beardy says:

Ok, I’m back with a few more reviews. You guys are wearing me out! But I’ll keep giving feedback to everyone who wants it.

    Jason Ragosta,

The First Chip: Great set, great actors, great set up and great effects. But I think you went in the wrong direction here. You went for cute instead of crazy and Doritos never picks spots that are cute. A wild and wacky ad about Pinocchio would have been a killer idea. If you still have all those props, I’d keep that in mind for next year. Same notes go for all versions of this ad.

Bad Monster: Now this one I like a lot. It’s a genius idea and well executed. I’m adding it to my list of favorites. I can’t believe it took 70 years for someone to do a parody where the Flower Girl fights back. My only concern is that the Universal Studios-style Frankenstein might be legally protected. I remember hearing that back in the 60’s, the only reason Herman Munster was allowed to look like the classic, square-headed Frankenstein was because Universal was involved in producing the show.

    Ryan,

Doritos Wizard: Really nice effects. This was a good idea but the script needed a few revisions. I liked how the “wizard’ got revenge but it all happened to fast. And the beginning was too slow so you could have made the wand attack happen sooner. Check out this other CTSB entry that has a wizard and some magic:

    /#/gallery?video=16458

The attack happens at like the 23 second mark. So there is enough time for viewers to process the joke. And there’s also enough time for an extra joke at the end. If you push your “punchline” earlier it actually has more of an impact.

    Savannah,

The Babysitters: Ok, I would say this one might have finalist potential. It looks professional, it’s full of gags, it has a funny baby in and it’s got great pacing. But…I think it does have some issues. You took a real gamble by shooting an entry that is based on a fart joke. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good fart joke but I suspect Doritos won’t be crazy about it. Dortios has to submit all their potential ads to the network for approval before the super bowl. And there is a chance this one would get rejected. The network rejects anything that might be considered in bad taste these days. Also, the image of a baby farting cheese dust does nto make me want to eat Doritos. In fact, it makes me think about how unnatural Doritos are and how full of chemicals and preservatives they are. In a weird way, this ad might make viewers subconsciously think about how their body isn’t made to process neon orange dust! On other note, I would have cut out the thong gag. I think the pacing could have been slowed down some so viewers could have time to process the humor. Good job though. This will go on my best-of list.

    William Hill,

Office Pop: You guys certainly have some dance skills. But I would have liked to seen this idea fleshed out more. Right now it’s very light on story. Super Bowl ads are supposed to be epic and memorable. This one needed to have the power cranked up to 11, if you know what I mean. Maybe the whole office could have started dancing. Also, I think the production values might not be high enough for broadcast. But it feels like you were on the right track. You might want to do something similar to this idea next year or for a different contest.

I’ll be back with more reviews soon….

    Chad,

    Free The Ritos:

Hmmm, I have mixed feelings about this one. I think the gag of having a car full of guys trying to “stash” their Doritos as a cop approaches is really funny. But I don’t think the foreign-country angle works. I don’t think most casual viewers would get it. And a lot of people would miss the explanation at the start of the ad. And the shot of the guys handcuffed at the end is kind of harsh. It would remind people of torture and that would be a bit of a bummer. But this is a strong concept and you may want to try it again next year or for a different contest.

    Matt,

Peer Pressure: Ummmm….I love this one. I think the camera quality and sound quality are probably too low for this one to win but this is one of the first entries that actually made me smile. It’s simple and goofy and funny and the product is actually relevant to the plot. And the voice of the hand puppet is perfect. Where did you get the idea to do that voice? I ask because I did a similar voice in my entry for the Home run inn pizza video contest a few weeks ago!

I know I didn’t make up that voice but I have no idea where I first heard it! Now I really want to find out the original origin of that weird voice. So if you remember the source, let me know!

    Simone,

Do you or Vu do Doritos: This is a very, very strong concept. But I think it could have been executed better. The production values aren’t really broadcast quality and the pacing is kind of weird. It’s even kind of hard to tell what’s happening. But the hardest part of making a winning ad is coming up with a great idea. And a voodoo spell that makes a guy’s chips disappear every time he tries to eat Doritos is a great idea. I think if you polish this and if you come up with a big punchline you could have a really great entry for next year.

    Jake G,

For Internal Use Only: This one is very professional looking which is a big bonus. It’s well cast and the actors did a nice job. The concept is funny but I think overall it falls a little short. I think it should have been established right away that the guys were tanning with “spicy” Doritos. I think this one might have needed some dialogue. There is another potential issue with this ad: Doritos probably wouldn’t want to promote the idea that their product could ever hurt someone. The subtext of this ad is; dortio dust is so powerful it will turn your skin brown. And contact with spicy dorito dust will cause your skin to blister and peel. So it’s a great looking ad and I probably will even put it on my “best of” list but it might not be good for business.

At this point I’m just trying to squeeze in a few reviews whenever I have some time to kill. So more reviews to come….

  31. Beardy says:

    Joe C.

Dori’s Toes: I think the casting was the best part of this ad. The girl is cute and the guy is a classic, goofy husband. And I like the image of the girl holding that gigantic bag of chips. But you took a real gamble when you chose your subject matter. These commercials are supposed to make people want to eat Doritos. Your goal should be to make Doritos look delicious. So it maybe wasn’t a great idea to make your ad about a guy who likes a woman’s feet. Most people would be grossed out by that image. And the joke at the end (my feet don’t smell like Doritos) is funny…but not for a Doritos commercial. The thought of a cheesy-smelling foot is a real turn off.

    Michael,

Gravity: This one is a really strong submissions. The effects and photography are great and it was very well cast and acted (and good call on having your actress wear those shorts) But there are some big issues that jump out at me right away. First, there already was a Crash the Super Bowl finalist about a mountain climber who falls off a cliff. It was from the first CTSB and you can see it on the CTSB youtube channel. I think your entry is actually stronger than that one but it did beat you by like 6 years. Next, one thing you will never, ever see in a crash the super bowl finalist ad is violence against women. Guys get beat to hell but the ladies must always go unharmed. The shot where the climber falls on the girl is very well done but it is kind of graphic. I mean, that girl just got crushed to death. So thag]t might be too dark for a Doritos commercial. Finally, you used the famous “Wilhelm Scream” sound effect! Using any SFX that aren’t original is against the rules…..I think. I’m 99% sure I’m right though. Sorry to be a bummer It’s a really great video.

    Isaac B,

Day Dreaming: I like this idea but the execution didn’t work for me. This would have worked better if you had really swung for the fences and did more elaborate scenes. Right now the scenes are too short and not really funny. Plus this ad really needs a huge punchline.

The Plumber: First, I think the butt crack is a little too risqué for the super bowl. The ad moves really slowly but the joke is kind of genius. It’s very subtle and very weird.

I Trusted You: This makes very little sense….but I like it. It’s just super weird for weirdness sake. I love the bit where he mocks “lassie.” But man, I REALLY wanted to see a “call back” at the end where you brought lassie back for one more joke. I might put this one on my list of favorites.

The Tantrum: Another weird one. But it made me smile too. There was pretty much no point to this ad and that’s part of its charm.

    Chris Le,
My Friend Archie: I won’t spend time telling you what a great job you did with the CG. That’s obvious. Instead I’ll focus on the story. I like that there is a new joke every few seconds but the punchline was very predictable. But you didn’t actually let the punchline pay off all the way. Archie attacked the guy because he wanted the Doritos. But we only see like 1 second of Archie eating the chips. That’s way too fast for a TV viewer to catch, especially if they’re at a crowded super bowl party. And an Ad Meter focus group wouldn’t have a lot of time to crank their dials to “like” before the spot ended.

The effects are top notch. There’s no debating that. This will go on my “best of list” for sure. If you were to submit this to a Poptent or mofilm contest it would win easy. But dortios is running this contest because they want to find something they can’t get from a Madison avenue ad firm. If Doritos wanted a commercial about a CG robot, they could just hire ILM to make the most kick ass robot commercial ever. So the quality of your effects work doesn’t matter. To win, you would need to have awesome effects AND an awesome story. And the story here is a little weak. Having said all that, I can see how this one could make the finals. But to be honest, I don’t think it’s super likely. The problem is the Ad Meter. Imagine if this ad played on Super Bowl Sunday. It would be competing with some of the slickest, most elaborate, most effects heavy commercials ever made. This ad might look amazing and uber-professional compared to the rest of this year’s CTSB entries, but it wouldn’t seem so special where compared to the other ads that play during the game. CTSB entries are popular with viewers because they have awesome stories, not awesome production values. Your ad is memorable because of the effects…..not because it’s laugh our loud funny.

Finally, one possible Technical Issue: It sounds like you might have used stock sound effects. If you used sound effects that you didn’t create your self it could possible lead to disqualification.

  32. Matt says:

    Beardy,
Im glad you liked the spot. The voice was inpired by comedian Duncan Trussells voice on his podcast The Lavender Hour.

  33. pixelphile says:

    Beardy,

Thanks for your honest opinions on my entry “Gravity”. I think you were spot on with your observations. Just a couple of things I want to point out.

The finalist entry from 2007, “A Chip Lover’s Dream”, was a rock climbing video, but the story and content of my entry are completely different. Not to mention, the production quality of “A Chip Lover’s Dream” kinda sucked.

Regarding never ever seeing violence against women, if you recall there was a girl who gets hit in the head by a Pepsi can in last years finalist entry for PepsiMAX, entitled “Love Hurts”. Also, if you pay close attention, in my video the girl doesn’t get crushed, she actually just disappears. We made sure not to make it too real or too graphic.

And finally, regarding the use of the “Wilhelm Scream”, yes I am aware that it is not an original sound effect, but it is a file that is regarded as being part of the public domain and is available for fair use. We have versions of our edit with the actor doing the scream that we would be be happy to use if Doritos has a problem with the use of the “Wilhelm Scream”. I should point out that there are literally hundreds of submissions that use a “Record Needle Scratch” as part of their entry, and I am quite sure that they didn’t all create their own sound file.

That’s about it. Thanks again for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.

Keep up the great work that you are doing for the video contest community!

All very good points about Gravity. RE: The sound effect; there are lots of entries in the gallery that use uncleared sound effects. But Doritos has to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when they submit. They only start worrying about rights if they like an ad.

RE: A chip lover’s dream. You’re right about the production values on that one. If your ad and that ad were both submitted that first year yours would have won hands down. The problem is that Doritos has never picked two finalist that were about the same thing. So you’ll probably never see another finalist about mouse traps or tazers or check out girls.

RE: The pepsi max ad. I forgot about that girl getting hit by the can. That was pretty graphic. But that was for pepsi max and it was picked by a different set of judges.

Still, right now I’d say your spot is one of the 20 best I’ve seen so far.

    William,

Lover’s Quarrel: Nice production values, great actors and a funny punchline. This had is also light on dialogue and has a simple plot which are things that Doritos seem to like. I think this might be a little slow tto make the top 5 though. Most crash the SuperBowl finalists hook the viewer right away with a strange scenario. But this one doesn’t get interesting until at least half way in. It seems like instead of two people sitting on a couch we could have seen a series of funny events leading up to that moment.

    Alex,

Doritos Dad: I would call this one a contender for the Top 5. The shots of the dad in mourning are really great. But I think a few tweaks would have really put this one over the top. I think maybe you could have opened on he shot of the trunk opening. That would have left more time for something funny to happen with the dad trying to save the bag of chips. Him running for the bag would have added some suspense and drama. This one might be too subtle for Doritos but I like it.

    Billy P,

Storage Auction: I don’t really think this is the kind of thing Doritos is looking for. Technically it isn’t exactly broadcast-quality and the plot might be too “cerebral” for the super bowl. By that I mean it requires too much thinking and doesn’t have enough not shots. BUT….you have a fantastic concept here. I’m annoyed that I didn’t think of it! You could re-shoot this for any product you could imagine and enter it into a different video contest. So as far as concepts go, I think you did a great job.

    Freedom Bridgewater,

I Just Want Attention: Ok, I have to be blunt. I did not like this video. Starting the video off with audio of a screaming child was a bad idea. If this played on TV, most of the audience would change the channel immediately. The guy begging for sex is kind of creepy too. Finally, I don’t understand why the wife would be mad that the dad gave the girl Doritos. These commercials are supposed to male parents want to give Doritos to their kids.

Wonder Twins: This is a good effort but it’s not what Doritos is looking for. It just isn’t technically good enough to air on tv. The aspect ratio is messed up and the footage is blurry. If you’re going to enter next year, I recommend you head to doritos’ youtube channel to see the calibur of the ads that make the top 5 every year.

    Mohit,

How to Sell A Dorito: I like this concept and the general tone of the ad. And the punchline is perfect. But I think this one really needed some tweaking. Think biggest problem is the girl. She is very, very pretty but she is not super sexy. I think this would have worked better with a ridiculously hot girl since the “joke” is that men would be excited to see Doritos fall on a hot girl. Also, I don’t like the actor that pours the chips. He seems out of place. I think it would have been great to have a big, burly teamster type get up there and pour the chips. Then a director character could have delivered the punchline as he watched the action.

    more to come…

…There was also a Doritos top 3 finalist 2 years ago where the little boy “smacks his Mother’s boyfriend across the face”. Dont touch my momma dont touch my Doritos one.

I feel this was somewhat violent. So I think it depends on the “level/severity” of what THEY consider violence versus slapstick comedy. Its hard to read what ends up being deemed appropriate and unappropriate.

    Beardy,

Thanks for your response, and for saying that my spot Gravity “is one of the 20 best I’ve seen so far”.

I just wanted to mention that about 90% of all entries take place in a living room on a couch with guys watching football. So if Doritos didn’t want to reuse an old premise, then all of these entries should be ignored, which of course they won’t be. I think the “living room couch” scenario is probably the most overused premise, but it still seems to be acceptable and nobody every complains about it being derivative. Just some food for thought.

    All the best,

    Michael “Pixelphile”

  39. Hey Beardy!

Been a fan of this site since I stumbled onto it last year. We had a top 30 PepsiMax for you last year, and this year, different team, but I’m still in front of the camera for it on this Doritos spot.

  41. Beardy says:

    4Kmedia,

Taze the Flavor: Whoa….not cool man, not cool. A big, burly construction worker cattle-prodding a little old lady and making her convulse is not funny. I understand that she was going to zap him first but it’s still in bad taste. End of review.

    David,

Paint Fight: This a very strong entry. It has lots of god action and a very nice pay off. But I feel like you fell just a tiny bit short. Do you remember that scene in the third Indiana Jones movie where Indy is on an air ship and he pretends to be taking tickets? And then he throws a guy out the window and says to the other passengers, “No Ticket!” And then everyone hurries to give them their tickets? I think the painter should have thrown off a witty line like that to whoever was outside. Like maybe he could have said, “He took my Doritos” and then the person outside (maybe just back from shopping) nervously offers a bag. Still, this is a good one and I could MAYBE see it making the finals. This idea could definitely win a smaller video contest so if you don’t make the top 5 you should recycle it for sure.

    Marty Colasuonno,

The Prankster: This has a really good premise. But I think for it to work, you would need higher production values. Some ads can be done cheaply and some just need to look a little slicker. And this idea would just look much better if it was shot and edited by pros. But there’s a bigger problem here: The t-shirts the kids are wearing have artwork on them. Technically that’s a rule violation. Doritos I guess could blur out the shirts but that would really be noticeable. This is another idea I’d consider using for a smaller contest.

    Viking,

Show and Tell: This is a wild one and I really like the energy. Great editing too. But I would have to guess that Doritos won’t like seeing their product smashed into the ground. You did a nice job making this spot (though I think the color needed to be tweaked some) but I think the idea wasn’t right for a chip commercial. The shot of the girl catching the chip was great though. But the image of the chips being stepped on isn’t super appetizing.

    Craig Michaelson,

Put the Super Back in your Super Bowl: This spot has good energy and good action and the main character clearly really loves Doritos. (that’s an angle that most people forget about). The bit where the guy catches the dog is a brilliant gag. But other than that, there wasn’t a ton of comedy in this one. There are a few spots where the action slows down and I think you could have cut those and added two or three quick jokes…you know, more crazy stuff happening as they guy ran to the store to make his journey seem more amazing.

PS: Thanks for being a fan of the site! Which Pepsi max ad was yours last year?

    Rob,

Waking the Dad: Sorry to be kind of blunt but I didn’t like this one. The kinds screeching was like nails on a chalkboard. And the mom smearing dog food on the dad’s face was just incredibly gross. And then the dog licked it off!! Ahhh! You don’t want to gross people out in the middle of a commercial for a food product. The general concept (kids trying to wake up a dad) is pretty universal and has a lot of potential. You may want to re-think this idea and re-do it for another contest. You could basically make this ad about any food product.

Thanks for the honest response to Storage Auction, /#/gallery?video=13823. It was actually shot 1080i XDCamProRes422 which is very much broadcast quality. I think you’re probably thrown by it being 29.97fps and not 24fps like most people’s DSLR’s are shooting. Definitely a different look. Also the graphics are a little cheesy being that it was shot & edited a day before deadline. I agree a bit “cerebral”. Possibly hard to grasp if not familiar w/ storage reality shows.
